I watched this too! (the 1st season anyway, then I got kind of bored)
Mostly b/c I was interested was interested in how they would depict Jews and Jewish life in 1st century Judea, and b/c I’m interested in Christianity from a predominantly historical-critical perspective (I read a lot of Bart Ehrman).
I was pleasantly surprised with the production values and attempts at accuracy in the portrayal of Judaism!
2 things stood out to me the, though:
1. Why is it that every time someone is depicted making a b’rachah, it always seems to be “borei p’ri hagafen” (over wine)?
2. I found it funny when some of the very obviously Israeli actors (particularly “Peter”, if I remem correctly) would slip from pronouncing something in the English, Christian way to pronouncing it in the “correct” Hebrew way—there were multiple instances, but the only one I can call to mind is one time when Peter calls a character named Abraham “Avraham”.
Thanks for the intro to this show, I hadn't found it yet, looks interesting. On my list.
I'm currently watching Messiah on Netflix. It's not historical but fictional. It features a Jesus-like character in modern times, and the main plot is everybody trying to figure out if he's for real. It's better than I expected, pretty well done.
